Conflict in Gaza – The Torah Perspective
Article by Rabbi Joseph Dershowitz 21 August 2005
We daily hear of turmoil and conflict in the state of Israel
concerning
the “disengagement process.” In
the eyes of the world it seems to be
a
conflict between different parties or religious
groups. There are
those
who opine that maintaining Israeli control
over the Gaza Strip is the
fulfillment of a great religious imperative.
They daily declare that,
according to the Torah, it is forbidden to
give back any territories,
while their more extreme elements demand
that blood be spilled in
furtherance of this cause. Others support
the current withdrawal in
order to better “secure” the
Israeli state.
We feel it is our obligation, in this time
of confusion, to
state
the
true Torah position on this current issue
as well as concerning the
state of Israel itself. As we present the
Torah approach to Zionism
and
the Zionist state it will become clear the
true Torah position
concerning the territories.
It was always the opinion of the true Jewish
leaders, since the
advent
of Zionism, that Jewish nationalism is fundamentally
opposed to basic
Torah belief.. We have been abjured by the
Almighty as a
people to remain peacefully in exile and
to await the Divine
redemption, Our sages have further
foretold that any attempt to violate these
conditions of our exile
will
result in catastrophic bloodshed. This Zionist
effort of human/
military
redemption is, thus, a core denial of the
basic Jewish belief in a
Divine mandated exile and, eventual, Heavenly
initiated redemption.
The frightening prophecy of our holy teachers
has been
substantiated over the past six decades
in the Hold Land where
one blood bath has ceaselessly followed
the other.
Therefore, it is obvious that the Jewish
people, who have chosen
to continue the Torah path and their
leaders, the Torah giants
of this and previous generations, see
no imperative whatsoever in
maintaining control over Gaza and the
West Bank
In fact, the reverse is true. Every inch
of Jewish sovereignty
maintained over the Holy Land is the
gravest of sins sin. We may
not engage in any agitations to continue
it nor may any Jewish
blood or that of any nation be spilled
in order to achieve or
maintain it.
Our opinion, the Torah opinion, as steadfastly
upheld by all Jews
throughout the ages is clear: We have no
connection of any sort
to the Zionist state. We see no good in maintaining
control over
the territories or over any part of the Holy
Land. All the self -
appointed
representatives of the Jewish people, who
perform daily on the world’s
stage, do not represent the Torah or the
people of Torah. They are
dangerous charlatans.
We patiently and prayerfully await the day
when we will be
redeemed
by
the righteous Messiah who will
usher in true peace among all men in a
redeemed and sanctified |
